sustainability

I have always created by gathering all that I can possibly save from landfill.

My storage solutions are second hand furniture, glass jars and plastic pots that food and products came in. I refuse to buy plastic if there is another achievable option.

Divine Fruit of Autumn pieces largely make use of pre-loved clothing, deconstructed pre-loved jewellery and second hand fabrics, these have been found in and around my community or kindly donated.

I buy local or Australian products whenever possible to support local business and to minimise my carbon footprint. I save every scrap of fabric, every button and clasp that is still in good condition. Most of the work requires hand stitching, and I hand make my own felt using locally sourced Merino and Corridale wool.

These hands-on processes minimise electricity usage. I’m not a night owl and my studio is bathed in natural light. I walk to work…through my garden!

I will use leather over plastic, sometimes new, sometimes pre-loved. I know there will be debate about the environmental impact of leather, however I have been so drawn in by the ancient techniques of felting and leatherwork… they feel right and healthy. I think this heralds back to my Viking roots.

I do use plastic beads, saving them from landfill or the ocean and I do have to import a few things…rivets need to be new and the affordable option is overseas. I use a tiny amount of fabric glue and paint and will continue to hunt for better alternatives to use.

Every creation tells a story of conscious craftsmanship and environmental harmony. Let me help you up-cycle your old clothes, jewellery, fabrics, hats and more.
